WSOP 2011 - $50k Players’ Championship Day 3 complete; 29 remain

Day 3 of the $50,000 8-Game Players’ Championship has concluded with 29 players all still in contention with a view to taking down the $1.7m first prize and the bracelet with the most status behind it. Josh Arieh leads the way into Day 4 with 28 poker greats snapping at his heels.

The $1,000 NL event – the last of the 2011 WSOP – has been narrowed down to just 45 players from a near-record 4,576 field. The fast and furious Day 2 saw close to 600 players eliminated at a breakneck rate with names hitting the rail including Jeff Madsen, Terrence Chan and Martin Jacobson.

The second day of the $50,000 Players‘ Championship has whittled down the record field of 128 players to just 74 with only four players busting on a super deepstacked Day 1 but dozens falling on Day 2. At the end of it all, Ben Lamb takes the chip lead to Day 3.

Day 1b of the last “Weekend Warrior“ donkament concluded yesterday with a total field of 4,576 making this the second largest tournament in World Series of Poker history, behind only the inaugural $1,000 event won by Steve Sung in 2009.

Not as unusually as you‘d expect, the $1,000 Ladies‘ Event drew a lot of attention this year. For the past couple of years it’s been under attack as men enter (some dressing in drag rather too convincingly, Shaun Deeb) knowing they cannot be turned away under discrimination laws. This year a man made the final table.

Unfortunately the UK bracelet total remains unchanged, though we have brought back an additional $716,282 after Chris “Moorman1” Moorman failed to overcome a 3-1 chip deficit heads-up, giving Joe Ebanks the $10,000 6-max NL Championship and the first million dollar prize of the 2011 WSOP.

The third day of the $1,500 NL event – event #48 of the WSOP 2011 – has concluded but still four players remain to battle it out for a bracelet and $650,223. Only one notable name remains and he’s sitting second in chips – WPT Champion-slash-WCOOP-winner-slash-$25k NL HU runner-up Yevgeniy “JovialGent” Timoshenko.

Appropriately, the oldest player at the final table of the $2,500 2-7 Triple Draw event showed the young’uns what for in the game considered to be the most “old school”. Leonard Martin beat Justin Bonomo heads-up to secure his first bracelet and a tasty $190,000.

One of the landmark events of the WSOP is down to heads-up with Chris “Moorman1” Moorman battling Joe Ebanks for the $10,000 6-max NL bracelet that might as well be renamed “The Online Players’ Championship”. Moorman made it past a final table that included ElkY, Mike Sowers and Tristan Wade in order to get heads-up.
