WSOP 2011 – Day 1 of $5k NL attracts field of 865 players

One of the staple events of the WSOP, the $5,000 NL tournament, joined the $1,500 Omaha 8 event in attracting a record field with 865 players putting up or qualifying into the event. This gives us 73 more players than the 2010 field and a full 200 more than the 665 that competed in this event in 2009.

The field of 128 players at the first ever $25,000 Heads-Up NL Championship event at the WSOP is down to a final eight after the return of sixteen – and departure of eight – surviving players during yesterday’s Day 2 play. Jake Cody is flying the flag for the UK and going for the Triple Crown in the toughest event of the summer.

So far, so good at the WSOP 2011. Despite Black Friday the opening $25,000 event managed to garner a $3m prize pool and the first affordable open event, the $1,500 Omaha 8, received a record turnout – 107 more players than registered in 2010.
