A gigantic field came close to eclipsing last year’s overall field of 6,844 as 2,809 players battled it out for a gargantuan Day 1d. Rumour had it that hundreds more players wished to compete but even the vast halls of the Rio couldn’t accommodate them.

As announced by the man himself and the Poker Players’ Alliance, US congressman Barney Frank came to visit the World Series of Poker Main Event at the Rio on Day 1c, coming to say “shuffle up and deal” as well as some more useful things.

The third of the World Series of Poker’s Main Event starting days attracted the largest field so far, with 1,697 players registering for Day 1c. However, it is almost certain that this year’s WSOP will not beat the numbers of 2008 – the way the totals have added up so far, Day 1d would need over 3,000 entrants to top last year. The Rio doesn’t have that capacity.

As I roll into week two of the trip here, it seems like a good time to reflect on what’s happened so far. As it turns out, surprisingly little. I’ve played only once since the last update, that being a $550 at the Venetian. Suffice to say I didn’t last long enough to even flirt with the idea of winning the top prize of $80k.

It may have been the smallest starting day field since 2003 bit it was one chock full of former World Champions. Greg Raymer, Chris Ferguson, Carlos Mortensen, Amarillo Slim Preston and Jim Bechtel all celebrated Independence Day by making it through to day two. There’ll be no third Main Event bracelet for Doyle Brunson though who busted out in the early afternoon as did the 2003 champion Chris Moneymaker.

In a scene that wouldn’t have looked out of place on It’s A Knockout it was a man dressed as Sasquatch (mascot of WSOP sponsor Jack Link’s Beef Jerky) who declared the 2009 Main Event under way. Canada’s Eric Cloutier holds the chip lead at the end of four opening days with Briton Redmond Lee a close second.

137 players bought in for the third annual Ante Up For Africa Charity Event but in the end it was Alex Bolotin who emerged victorious. The winner donated half of his $176,000 winnings to the ENOUGH Project and International Rescue Committee, a gesture that was repeated by virtually all the players who made the money.
