WSOP Main Event Day 1B report

WSOP Main Event Day 1B report

Monday, 6 July 2009

It may have been the smallest starting day field since 2003 bit it was one chock full of former World Champions. Greg Raymer, Chris Ferguson, Carlos Mortensen, Amarillo Slim Preston and Jim Bechtel all celebrated Independence Day by making it through to day two. There’ll be no third Main Event bracelet for Doyle Brunson though who busted out in the early afternoon as did the 2003 champion Chris Moneymaker.

Other big names in the 873 runner field to make an early exit included David Pham, Vicky Coren, Ralph Perry and Jeremiah Smith. Mike Matusow and Barry Greenstein just about made it through the day but will be nursing short stacks when play resumes later this week.

The unofficial chip leader is WSOP debutant Brandon Denes who will return with a stack of 137,075. “People were just playing really tight. Every time I raised people would just fold or call and fold,” said Demes. “My table was pretty soft so it wasn’t that bad. Luck of the draw I guess.”
