The Main Event is under way

Monday, 6 July 2009

In a scene that wouldn’t have looked out of place on It’s A Knockout it was a man dressed as Sasquatch (mascot of WSOP sponsor Jack Link’s Beef Jerky) who declared the 2009 Main Event under way. Canada’s Eric Cloutier holds the chip lead at the end of four opening days with Briton Redmond Lee a close second.

It looks like Shane Warne may miss the start of his stint in the commentary box for next week’s first Ashes Test after a very strong opening day. The blonde leg spinner has a stack of over 87,000 and was in the top 30 at the close of play. Seinfeld star Jason Alexander also had a great day and is near the head of the field.

Former World Champion Johnny Chan and 2009 bracelet winners Greg Mueller, Jason Mercier, Roland de Wolfe all navigated their way safely through Day 1A but fortune wasn’t shining on Jerry Yang, Andy Bloch, Allen Cunningham, John Phan and Freddy Deed who all made early exits.

Other big names amongst the 821 survivors are Tony G, Phil Laak, Eli Elezra and Jimmy Fricke.
