We missed the action on the hand but Antonio Esfandiari filled us in – Dwan had K-K against Esfandiari's 7-7 on a 5-6-8 and he has hit the rail. With both him and Daniel “jungleman12” Cates out of the running they can concentrate on their online challenge.

Again it's hard to establish which is the worst table - perhaps the one shared by Chris "Moorman1" Moorman, James Akenhead and Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier; maybe the Tom Dwan/Antonio Esfandiari table takes it; perhaps the Greenstein/Benyamine combo?

With the first twenty-minute break out of the way, we rushed around replenishing the Bluff Europe magazine bins (go on, take one) before the players began filling seats again. We’re about twenty minutes into the 100/200 level now so here’s a few notable hands we’ve seen:

There is still about an hour and forty minutes for latecomers to show up here at The Empire for the World Series of Poker Main Event but as we go on our first break of the day we have had 180 registered for a total of 325 players so far. There is still 97 minutes to enter if you have £10,300 going.

Let’s take you on a stroll through The Empire at the moment – you come out of the press area (a big cupboard full of plug sockets and laptops) and turn right past the roulette tables and through the curtain...

Barry Shulman, who put an end to Daniel Negreanu’s efforts at the final table of this event last year, said “shuffle up and deal” and we were off for Day 1b. At this point there were very few players in the room – some, including Nenad Medic, were facing their opponents heads-up before the rest of the motely crew filed in.

Yesterday we saw 137 players compete in the £10,300 No Limit Hold 'em Main Event of the World Series of Poker Europe but only 78 of them survived Day 1a. Among the casualties were Roberto Romanello, Vanessa Selbst, Sorel Mizzi and Toby Lewis.

To the immense relief of all the players, dealers and waiting staff – not to mention knackered journalists – the magic 100 milestone has been reached and play will not be extended beyond midnight tonight. With the 250/500/50 level drawing to a close there are 99 players still hoping to return for Day 2 on Saturday.

Hellmuth calm at WSOPE Main Event - we know, weird!
Hellmuth calm at WSOPE Main Event - we know, weird!

Perhaps the biggest shock of today has been Phil Hellmuth – not the Lady Gaga entrance, we expect that mental stuff. It’s the fact that we saw his top pair lose out to 8d-2d making a flush and he didn’t react badly. He muttered something and his opponent began to defend himself but Hellmuth said: “I would have played the same, I’m just aggravated.”
