Level One drawing to a close at WSOPE Day 1b.

Friday, 24 September 2010

Let’s take you on a stroll through The Empire at the moment – you come out of the press area (a big cupboard full of plug sockets and laptops) and turn right past the roulette tables and through the curtain...

To your left you will see EPT San Remo champion Liv Boeree, looking bored and distracting (no, we didn’t mean distracted; think about it) at the table in the corner. She appears to be sharing a table with Adam “Roothlus” Levy judging solely from the back of his head and the UB cap.

The next table along sees Willie Tann hoping to make his third WSOPE final table of this year. Now go round behind the bar and you’ll find Tom “kingsofcards” Marchese chatting idly with his table. The next table over features none other than Phil Ivey himself, who seems to have made a few thousand since the start of play; intimidating his table into silence. Also downstairs is David Benyamine and Barry Greenstein, both sporting gold watches that could easily be mistaken for WSOP bracelets.

Up the stairs and the biggest rail crowd gathers, with Tom “durrrr” Dwan sitting next to Antonio Esfandiari. Fortunately for The Magician he is on Dwan’s right, so thank heavens for small mercies. As we watched, durrrr called a 850 turn bet on a Kh-Tc-9d-5c board and, after a long tank, called a 2,500 bet on a 6c river and mucked when shown T-9. He has dropped to about 24,000.

Then we walk into the upstairs room and in the furthest corner you can hear an American yell and a placating Israeli murmur as Mike Matusow (“blah blah HAHAHAHA blah idiots folding sets blah blah stack with bottom pair blah blah HAHAHA!” was all we got from him) and Eli Elezra share a table. Also present upstairs are Dave “Devilfish” Ulliott, James Akenhead, James Mitchell and Neil Channing, all hoping to bring another bracelet home for Britain. Except this bracelet is already here... we’re confused.
