Cantu Avenges Aguiar Defeat

Cantu Avenges Aguiar Defeat

Thursday, 8 November 2012

In the world of boxing if someone knocks you out and wins the bout you shake their hand and congratulate them on their victory. However, if you knock someone out of a poker tournament the usual routine is to claim they got lucky and challenge them to a heads-up battle.

Two players that seemed to comply with this trend in the last 24 hours were Brandon Cantu and Jonathan Aguiar. Having met at the final of this year’s WSOPE €10,000 Mix Max event, the pair seemed to develop a grudge with each other during the match; mostly spurred on by Cantu’s discontent with the tournament and everyone concerned with it. Indeed, after Aguiar claimed the title and the top prize the arguments soon began.

The disagreement eventually lead to the pair agreeing on a $130,000 (the difference between first and second prize) heads-up sit ‘n’ go. That match finally took place yesterday inside the Aria under the gaze of numerous poker pros.

Dubbed a “grudge match”, the pair battled back-and-forth with Aguiar seemingly having control over a large portion of the action. However, like a true Hollywood villain, Cantu battled back and eventually won the encounter after his pocket sixes held against Aguiar’s pocket fives.

After the match Aguiar decided to tweet about the action, writing: “Busto 55 vs. 66, I guess now it’s settled?”

As yet there’s been no such tweet from Cantu which suggests he’s still probably not a fan of Jonathan Aguiar.
