WSOPE Main Event Final Table: Players on a break

WSOPE Main Event Final Table: Players on a break

Thursday, 2 October 2008

Players have now gone on a 20 minute break as Bluff Europe recaps the action in the last two hours.

It was a dramatic two hours at the Empire as three players hit the rail in quick order. Two of the short stacks bit the dust, while Scott Fischman also took his final bow at the final table.

It all began with the elimination of Finn Toni Hiltunen, who was unfortunate to put his jacks up against Alekhin's pocket queens. Just minutes later and it was Robert Keston who ended up heading for the exit after his A-8 began - and ended - behind the pocket nines of Ivan Demidov. He got a few more 'ooooh's on the turn though when he picked up a flush draw that failed to materialise.

The final elimination was one of those hands which just play a certain way when the protagonist is playing for the win, and there is no doubt anything less than first would have disappointed Scott Fischman. On a flop of A-J-T, the American pro flopped top pair and a gutshot with his Ace-Queen, but he run into the stone cold nuts of Alekhin, who pitched his King-Queen up proudly when the chips found their way into the middle of the table.

The next session should see Sonnert make his move as he is nursing the shortest stack at the table. Meanwhile, we can expect to see Daniel Negreanu be a little more active at the table; thus far he has been a little nip and tuck about his approach to the final table, which seems prudent considering how the carnage that has ensued around him.

Five left, and it's all about the young pair of Russians at the moment. Let's see if the dominance continues into the third session here in London.
