Ziigmund canes Antonius for $844,000

Friday, 29 January 2010

Ilari “Ziigmund” Sahamies won over $600,000 at Full Tilt Poker last night. Despite some losses he managed to squeeze in 435 hands of $300/$600 Pot-Limit Omaha with fellow Finn – in fact, his poker mentor – Patrik Antonius.

In this case, the student surpassed the master. Antonius took less than 500 hands to lose the best part of a million dollars as he dropped $844,000 in short order. PLO is a brutal game, especially shorthanded, and with two aggressive players battling over a $1,100 pre-flop pot the hands get huge.

The largest pot that Ziigmund won during the course of the session was nearly 500 big blinds as he took a $281,000 pot. Cole South raised from the button when playing three-handed with the two Scandinavians and Ziigmund called. Antonius 3-bet to $7,500 and both players called for a $23,000 pre-flop pot.

A 2c-9c-3s flop saw Ziigmund check and his fellow Finn bet $18,600. After CardRunners instructor Cole South folded, Sahamies raised to $78,000. Antonius called and Ziigmund made a $51,000 bet for Antonius’s stack on a 3c turn.

Antonius called with As-Ad-5s-3d for turned trips but Ziigmund was a heavy favourite with Kc-Qc-Qh-4d. A 2d river made Ziigmund’s flush the winner and he took the pot.

Antonius lost over $860,000 in total while Cole “CTS” South managed to make a six-figure profit of $112k.
