Online poker banned in South Africa

Wednesday, 1 September 2010

Courts in South Africa have ruled that any form of online gambling is illegal. The ruling mean that online casinos and poker rooms offering business in the country will be prosecuted.

Head of legal services for the board and owner of a very ironic name, Lucky Lukhwareni, said, "We approached the media to alert them of the judgement which makes online casino operations illegal, and if they continue we will have them arrested and fight for conviction."

The new laws mean that both operators of gambling sites and players themselves could face a fine of up to 10,000,000 South African Rand (£890,000) if they are caught playing online.

This news comes after stories that South Africa was becoming a booming poker economy. The judgement will sadly take many fish (but fortunately a few sharks) from our online poker games.
