Eugene Katchalov Wins 21-Hour Heads-Up WCoOP

Monday, 14 September 2009

A marathon heads-up event was the weekend highlight of the PokerStars World Championship of Online Poker – the $530 NLHE heads-up event failed to break it’s $1m guarantee but still saw over 1,500 players enter to gun for a $170,000 first-place prize.

Joe Hachem, Greg Raymer, Chris Moneymaker, Katja Thater, Humberto Brenes, Ivan Demidov, Victor Ramdin, Vicky Coren, John Duthie, Bertrand Grospellier, and Jason Mercier all entered the event, but only two pros made it beyond the third round.

Barry Greenstein eventually finished in 82nd place, winning $1,000 for his troubles. No doubt he’ll one day use it to wipe his posterior as someone so rich hasn’t a clue what $1,000 actually is.

However, William Thorson rampaged on into the last eight, his aggressive style serving him well until he ran Kh-Jh into Ah-9h, being dominated in more ways than you can count. A nine on the flop and ace on the river hammered the final nails into his coffin, despite the support of ElkY, Johnny Lodden and Katja Thater in the chatbox.

Eventually the heads-up stage was reached, with Eugene 'MyRabbiFoo' Katchalov and JakusKhan agreeing to deal for $120k each and $40k for the winner. JakusKhan, who claimed to be falling asleep during the game, eventually bluffed Ts-2s on a K-8-x board which allowed MyRabbiFoo to call with K8 for two pair and win the extra $40,000 and a WCoOP bracelet.
