High winds made the pavilion structure unsafe and an early break was called while more tables were moved so that play could continue inside. The move was justified when one section of the pavilion’s wall and some tables were blown over not long after the relocation. The tent was back in use the following day, and has been reinforced.
Doyle Brunson was particularly annoyed by the chaos, and threatened to stop playing if order was not restored.
More drama came when Vinny Vinh, second in chips at the end of the first day of the $1000 + Reby No Limit Hold’em event, failed to turn up the following morning. Vinh, known for his fluent swearing, ranks 99th for all-time winnings with $2.3m.
Initially people were joking that Vinh had overslept, but some hours later, when Vinh’s seat still empty, the mood turned to one of extreme concern. By the time the break came, Vinh was close to being knocked out by blinds, and still had not been found.
Stu Ungar went missing at the 1990 WSOP, but was later found unconscious from a drug overdose in his room.
