World Poker Tour launch $100k buy-in at Bellagio

Friday, 18 March 2011

It was rumoured for a short while but quickly confirmed – the World Poker Tour is getting in on the crazy tournament buy-in action with a $100,000 event for the current season of the tour. The details are thin on the ground at the moment but it appears the tournament will take place around the WPT World Championship in May.

The event will be hosted at The Bellagio with the $25,000 Main Event Championship the attraction, drawing star-studded fields and winners including Yevgeniy Timoshenko and most recently David Williams who both picked up seven-figure scores.

Bellagio tournament director Jack McCelland said that he expects between 30 to 60 entrants for the event which seems optimistic even taking into account the super-balla field of pros that will be in Las Vegas naturally or especially for the $25,000 WPT Championship.

The Bellagio will be running a $1,000 rebuy super-satellite to compete in the event so perhaps McCellend isn’t being over-excited in stating those figures after all. However, with the Onyx Cup in Las Vegas a week before it could be that some players don’t fancy the idea of a $200,000 fortnight.
