Day 4 of the 2008 WPT Championship saw 55 return, with only 17
remaining at the end of play. The list of remaining players makes
for an intriguing finale to the World Poker Tour season though,
with a star-studded final table a distinct possibility.
Action kicked off from the very first hand, with Zvi Shiff
busting in 55th place, leading to a table redraw before some
players had even settled into their seats. Elimination followed for
Mats Rahmn, Tom Schneider, Tim Pham, Joe Sebok and J.C Tran.
Shortly after Jayde Tran bit the dust in 45th, leaving Isabelle
Mercier as the last woman standing. She didn’t stand for much
longer mind, eliminated in 41st place.
With the eliminations of two former WPT champions, Martin de
Knijff and Carlos Mortensen, in 39th and 38th respectively, the
field had whittled itself down to 37. When Schwartz exited in 37th,
the field went on a break, with the suspicion that the tournament
had to slow down now they were coming towards the business end of
the event. Not so.
The next few levels saw Men Nguyen, T.J Cloutier, John Hoang,
Tom McCormick, Steve Wong, and Danny Wong. The departure of Steve
Wong meant that Jonathan Little wrapped up the WPT Player of the
Year title for Season VI.
By the end of the day, only seventeen players had chips
accompanying their chairs. Of course, those left have had to skirt
around some of the best players in the world to get there. Then
again, some of those remaining ARE the best players in the world.
Look at this for a tough looking couple of tables!
Table 53
1. Kenny Tran - 1,442,000
2. Amir Vahedi - 3,907,000
3. Bryan Devonshire - 984,000
4. Jeff King - 1,903,000
5. Tommy Le - 1,950,000
6. Cory Carroll - 1,346,000
7. John Roveto - 556,000
8. Jeff Shulman - 473,000
Table 54
1. Karga Holt - 1,500,000
2. David Chiu - 1,742,000
3. Tom 'Durrrr' Dwan - 2,874,000
4. Andrew Black - 411,000
5. Gus Hansen - 2,929,000
6. David Tran - 2,543,000
7. Nick Binger - 701,000
8. Robert Mizrachi - 1,079,000
9. Michael Gracz - 1,674,000
Good luck picking a winner out of that line-up! Your writer
would love to see Kenny Tran bring home the title, if only because
he is one of the best No Limit Hold'em players in the world not to
have won a major title. What we do know is the final table of six
is going to be one of the best assembled in recent WPT seasons.
