When the remaining nineteen players returned for Day Five of the World Poker Finals, they were one away from the final two tables. Shorthanded play didn’t last for too long though, after the final 18 were set with Young Phan’s elimination in 19th. From here every climb up the final standings was a pay jump, but this didn’t stop the action.
After knocking out Bob Williams in 18th, Darren Nelson seemed to be on roll. That soon came to a halt though at the hands of 2005 Champion Nick Schulman. Nelson, with nearly 1 million in chips, flopped top two pair against Schulman’s top pair and flush draw, all the money went in and Schulman’s diamond duly arrived on the turn, sending Nelson out and Schulman up.
The former champion didn’t stop there though, taking T.J. Cloutier out in 12th position. It seemed that Cloutier has modified his own advice a little – formerly advocating the third raise as always aces or kings, Schulman’s opening bet was reraised by T.J, only for the young pro to come back over the top. Aces or Kings? Cloutier decided enough was out there and went all in with pocket Jacks, only to find Schulman was indeed holding pocket Aces.
2006 Champion Nemad Medic was having a harder time of it, nursing a short stack for most of the day. With the elimination of overnight leader Freddy Deeb in 9th position, John Myung in 8th and Rodney Legendre in 7th, the TV Final Table is set. Schulman (4,395,000) and Medic (500,000) both made it, along with new chip leader Tom Dwan, who is sitting on 4,875,000.
