Considering the explosion in poker’s popularity in recent years, it’s only right and proper that the game has a regulatory body to ensure everybody, from individual players to tournament organisers, play fair. Hence the coming of the World Poker Association, described somewhat bombastically as the “PGA of poker” by founder Jesse Jones.
The overall aim of the not-for-profit organisation is straight forward: unite for-profit poker organisations under one banner and enforce uniform standards. Of course, that’s easier said than done, but already they’ve got some big names on board, including Barry Greenstein, Kenna James and tournament director Matt Savage. They’ve even got some vocal backing from last year’s WSOP champ Joe Hachem, who has described the WPA as, “…one of the most important steps in lifting our game to a truly professional status.” Anyone can join and anyone who plays even semi-seriously is being urged to do so.
