Why alcohol and poker don't mix

Tuesday, 17 May 2011

There are myriad reasons why poker and alcohol don't mix. A lack of mental clarity can lead to poor decision making, false bravado and many a lost post. There's also the danger of getting a bit lairy and obnoxious at the table which is never a good thing. Just ask Scotty Nguyen.

Of course one thing that is really minus EV after mixing booze and poker is getting behind the wheel of a car but that is precisely what a man admitted at Cambridge Crown Court this week.

60-year-old Ronald Doig avoided a prison sentence despite driving the wrong way up the A428, causing a woman to drive into a bus and then attempting to cover up his tracks. All this while being over twice the legal drink drive limit after necking four or five pints at a poker game.

Judge Hawkesworth sentenced Doig to six months in prison, suspended for 12 months with 12 months' supervision, and disqualified him from driving for two years.
