What Jerry Yang has done with his millions

What Jerry Yang has done with his millions

Friday, 6 August 2010

In 2007, a Vietnamese psychologist named Jerry Yang won the World Series Of Poker Main Event by making a backdoor straight with pocket eights. Three years later, the Pocket 8s Sushi and Grill plays host to a huge crowd every Friday in California as Yang has become a legend among the Asian community.

Not just for good food – Yang has given away more than $2,000,000 of his own money in order to benefit the lives of others via the Make-A-Wish Foundation and Ronald McDonald House. His charity poker tournaments have raised over $800,000 for Chinese disaster victims and California fire victims.

Yang is a refugee from Hmong, Vietnam, and he recalls crossing the water in a cramped boat between the exchanging gunfire of Vietnamese and Thai troops: “I heard mothers crying, kids crying, kids drowning – I still have nightmares about it,” he said.

Yang is certainly not one of the most popular Main Event champions out there but he is a good man to have won millions. Having built his way up from literally nothing he is now giving it back to help the impoverished and needy.
