As the old cliché goes, the show’s not over until the fat lady sings. While the Eastern team may have had a mezzo warming up her vocal chords, a dramatic fight back from the West team meant they were the ones singing all the way to the bank.

As the old cliché goes, the show’s not over until the fat lady sings. While the Eastern team may have had a mezzo warming up her vocal chords, a dramatic fight back from the West team meant they were the ones singing all the way to the bank.
The tournament was held in Vienna, it was an online qualifier from Germany who played the hero’s role for Team West. Bjoern Kaersten won the final table and netted himself €10,000 in the process. Second place went to UK qualifier Jack Powell, a 23-year-old online player from London.
Before the tournament began, the bookies had Team West as the 4/5 favourites to retain the title. Their team looked strong on paper, with Dave 'The Devilfish' Ulliott, Roland de Wolfe, Ciaran O'Leary, 'Flying Dutchman' Marcel Luske, Ian Frazer and Michael Keiner amongst their ranks. Team East included Tony G, Alexander Kravchenko and last year's European Challenge winner, Branimir Brunovic. None of the big-hitters from the Team West side made it to the final table though, instead leaving five online qualifiers to take on a strong East line-up including Tony G and Brunovic.
Despite losing two of their team early on, Team West managed to overcome the odds when they ended up with Kaersten and Powell heads up. That was enough for the team to win the overall event and it was just left to decide the individual winner which came when Kaesrten’s J-8 held up against T-4.
