Wembley to host 2013 ISPT opener

Wednesday, 16 May 2012

With a near £800 million pound bill to foot for the construction of Wembley we knew the FA would be taking every opportunity it could to refill the coffers. The concerts, FA Cup semi finals and American football games were expected but poker?

It appears that poker will indeed be making its debut at the national stadium next year with the announcing the first online and live tournament in poker history.

Organisers of the event, which is provisionally scheduled to take place from 31st May to 6th June 2013, hope that 30,000 players will compete on digital tablets with the top 3,000 players advancing to a live tournament which will be played on the hallowed Wembley turf.

Details are still somewhat sketchy but the buy-in is expected to be €600 with a prize pool of approximately €20m.

“We hope that this event will be fondly remembered by the participants and that it breaks all records. We had to consider an exceptional set up, a location that can host 30,000 people. Wembley seemed like the perfect option.” said organisers Laurent Tapie and Prosper Marquelier.

This being England, there's always the weather to consider, and despite what it says on the ISPT.com website, Wembley does not have a fully retractable roof.
