Already seen as the whipping boy of the British Press thanks to a slew of gambling allegations, footballer Wayne Rooney has seen fit not to take part in a charity poker event.
The Manchester United and England star last week faced days of blanket coverage, which exposed his debts of around $1 million. This was followed by allegations that the businessman he owed was an associate of England teammate Michael Owen. Both denied that there was any rift, but with other England players weighing in and debates about whether they should be allowed to play cards at all, it seems the story just won’t go away. Owen has also said that he will not be attending, presumably because he too wants to avoid any more awkward questions, especially as preparations for the World Cup this summer are well under way.
The event itself has been organised by Chelsea and England player Frank Lampard, along with his cousin and former Liverpool player, Jamie Redknapp. Be sure to keep your eyes open for stories of which England players lost vast swathes of their salaries, making sure that football gets onto the front pages for all the wrong reasons.
