World Series of Poker Europe Main Event begins today

Thursday, 23 September 2010

Today is the day that we’ve all been waiting for – the Main Event of the 2010 World Series of Poker Europe is starting at noon when hundreds of players will pay up five figures in the hopes of becoming the next Annette Obrestad.

This is the fourth World Series of Poker Europe Main Event. The first was in 2007 when Annette “Annette_15” Obrestad won £1,000,000 for her inaugural televised appearance at a live tournament. Aged just 18, her appearance as an innocent, average girl belied her poker style; it was the embodiment of Scandinavian aggression.

The next year, John Juanda beat a stacked final table over a huge period of time – he played black-cloaked Russian Stanislav Alekhin for seven hours of a record-breaking 22 hour final table before finally despatching his opponent and claiming his biggest bracelet yet – with quads, no less.

In 2009 it was the Daniel Negreanu show – arriving at the nine-handed table as the shortest stack, he quickly accumulated chips and doubled to lead Barry Shulman going heads-up. An epic poker battle ensued, with the lead swinging back and forth for hours before Negreanu’s flush was cruelly outdrawn by Shulman’s A-A with a rivered two-outer.

Can Negreanu make his third WSOPE final table in a row? Will Shulman put up a title defence? Will another unknown youngster take the poker world by storm? There’s only one way to find out and that’s by following Bluff Europe’s live reporting right here.
