WSOPE Main Event Day 1a resumes; 108 left

Thursday, 23 September 2010

The tables are broken as just nine sets of players remain in the WSOPE Main Event; this simply has the effect of consolidating the Tables of Death into super-death-tables. The king of them still has to be the downstairs table featuring Erik Seidel and Jason Mercier on either side of footballer – and solid poker player – Teddy Sheringham.

Behind this table, Allen Cunningham and Brandon Cantu are across from each other – the former has chipped up nicely to over double his starting stack while UB pro Cantu isn’t far behind. Head upstairs and The Hendon Mob have been taken into one room with Joe Beevers and Barny Boatman sharing the felt and Ross Boatman – looking well chipped up with two big stacks of 500s – lingers at the back opposite Arnaud Mattern.

In the corner and atypically quiet sits Phil Hellmuth, who is perhaps brooding over the loss of his chip stack which by our counts looks to have fallen to around 22,000. Also upstairs is Howard Lederer, still on a middling stack and chatting to various Full Tilt Poker patch-wearers. Two of them are nursing short stacks with Andy Bloch and John Juanda both at the bottom of the chip counts.

Justin “BoostedJ” Smith is on his iPhone in the middle table with what looks like almost exactly his starting stack on the felt. In the corner of that room, Jeff Lisandro and Scott Montgomery are playing six-handed while waiting for their table to be broken. The Italian-American (“whaddadamaddawidyou?”) doubled through the former November Niner in a classic coinflip when his 33 held against KQ to chip him up to 47,000. Currently the entire downstairs area is clear of Main Event play as Gus Hansen takes on Jim Collopy for the High Roller Heads Up bracelet. We’ll bring you news of that shortly.
