British pros dominating WSOPE; Sam Trickett leads Day 1b

British pros dominating WSOPE; Sam Trickett leads Day 1b

Friday, 24 September 2010

We first heard of Sam Trickett when he won the GUKPT Luton event way back when in 2008. Since then he has accumulated more than $1.7m in live tournament winnings and most recently took down the PartyPoker World Open.

Now everyone in the room has heard of him because with more than 120,000 in front of him he is by far and away the Day 1b chip leader. He got a couple of nice payoffs to boost his already big stack into the stratosphere, firstly getting three streets of value with A-A against an ambitious 4-4 and then got A-J to pay him off when he had A-K, busting his unfortunate opponent in the process.

And who came third in that aforementioned GUKPT Luton event? None other than Irish Open champion James Mitchell who is currently rolling on almost 80,000. Other Brits building stacks include JP Kelly and Praz Bansi. They will join Joe Beevers, Ross Boatman and Barny Boatman for Day 2 tomorrow should their stacks survive the next two and a half blind levels.

It's good news for Swedes and Americans, too - we passed Daniel Negreanu as he bet 1,650 on a Kx-Qx-9x-Jx board to take a 2,800 pot and boost his stack to approximately 43,000. Viktor "I am but not but might be Isildur1" Blom was raking in a big pot as we passed. Missed the action but doubtless it involved a pre-flop 5-bet; a flop check-raise and an overbet on the turn. He looks to have a stack approaching 60,000 after some early trouble.

Currently we have 180 players left on the official clock but it is probably a few less than that. Speculation in the press room suggests a Day 2 field of around 200 players.
