World Series of Poker Europe Day 1b Concludes

Monday, 28 September 2009

Day 1b of the Betfair World Series of Poker Europe 2009 Main Event drew to a close late last night with over 100 players still in the field – in fact, the 107 survivors far outweighed the 79 players coming from Day 1a.

Steve Zolotow joins Brian Powell and Jason Mercier as the Day 1 chipleaders; The 'Bald Eagle' surged into the day 1b chip lead after he doubled through to 160k with a set-over-two pair in the dying minutes of the day - he finished with 166,825. However, with just under 200,000 in chips, Brian Powell will return today at 5.30pm as the overall Day 1 chipleader.

The notable names for Day 1b aren’t quite as impressive as Saturday’s roster, which saw practically every single famous pro take to the felt. However, yesterday did see the likes of Annette Obrestad, Chris Ferguson, Barry Greenstein and Daniel Negreanu show up to try and make the top prizes. Oh, and they were all at one table – yikes!

Antonio Esfandiari, David Williams, Dennis Philips, Michael Binger, Josh Arieh, Peter Eastgate, and reigning WSOPE Champion John Juanda all showed their faces too, with some surviving for tonight’s action.

As well as Steve Zolotow, some notable large stacks include Daniel Negreanu who will hope to emulate and expand on his final table at the Main Event last year. He lost 2/3 of his stack early on in the day but was able to small-ball his way up the leaderboard.

November Niner Antoine Saout (above) is also begining to turn heads as he looks to 'pull an Ivan Demidov' - and i don't been he is in sexual pursuit of the Russian poker player. Finishing day 1b with the third largest stack of 144,000, Frenchman Antoine Saout could imitate the achievement of Ivan Demidov last year when he made the final table of the WSOPE after beating almost 7,000 people to make it to the final table of the WSOP Main Event.
