Eugene Katchalov wins Event #5 $1.5k Seven Card Stud

Sunday, 5 June 2011

We can scrub another name from the “best player never to have won a World Series bracelet” list after Eugene Katchalov won the $1,500 Seven Card Stud event last night.

The Ukrainian-born pro outlasted a 357 runner field that included the likes of Tom Dwan, Daniel Negreanu, Jason Mercier and Sorel Mizzi to walk away with a first prize of $122,909. That figure may be small potatoes compared to his $1.5m score at the High Roller event at the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure, but the kudos of the bracelet will certainly make up for it.

The Team PokerStars pro overcame a 5 to 1 chip deficit to beat WPT Venice winner Alessio Isaia heads up, hitting consecutive cards on sixth and seventh street to hit a better two pair than his Italian rival to seal the title.

The final table positions and payouts were as follows:

1 Eugene Katchalov $122,909
2 Alessio Isaia $75,911
3 Eric Buchman $48,961
4 Jonathan Spinks $35,476
5 Dennis Parker $26,083
6 Kai Landry $19,456
7 Ali Eslami $14,723
8 Vasili Lazarou $11,301
9 Jeremy Ausmus $8,800
