Vanessa Hallebuyck wins Event #22; $1k Ladies’ NLHE

Monday, 14 June 2010

A huge field of 1,054 women put up $1,000 to compete in the second non-open event of the 2010 World Series of Poker; Event #22 the $1,000 NL Ladies’ Championship. Actually, make that 1,048 women and six men including none other than Shaun Deeb.

Deeb, whose man-boobs were scarily convincing as he donned a wig and drag selected for him by EPT San Remo winner Liv Boeree, claimed to have been forced to enter after losing a bet. The Ladies’ event is, of course, for ladies but gender discrimination laws mean that the WSOP cannot turn away men who wish to enter.
The final table was full of oestrogen, though, and eventually two hands in the closing stages of the event led to Vanessa Hellebuyck taking down almost $200,000 for her first WSOP bracelet. With three players left she made a brave call with second pair to eliminate Timmi Derosa holding just queen high. In the last hand her pocket fives overcame the Td-9d of Sidsel Boesen and that was that.

Daniel Negreanu and Dusty “leatherass9” Schmidt both posted blogs attacking players such as Deeb who they claimed were disrespecting the Ladies’ Event. The Team PokerStars Pro and four-time WSOP bracelet-winner said: “I mean, you have over 1000 women in that event who love it! Why in the world would we want to spoil their fun in the name of sexual equality? Men have had it pretty good, so whining about sexual equality as a man is a pretty lame excuse to take part in a ladies event... it's just plain foolish. You aren't fighting for men's rights, or women's right for that matter, you are just being an ass.”

The full final table positions and prizes were as follows:

Vanessa Hellebuyck $192,132
Sidsel Boesen $118,897
Timmi Derosa $74,389
Allison Whalen $53,994
Kami Chisholm $39,860
Holly Hodge $29,880
La Sengphet $22,728
Bonnie Overfield $17,520
Loren Watterworth $13,688
