The first $10,000 event kicks off – World Championship Stud

Friday, 4 June 2010

We’ve had to wait a while but the first $10,000 ‘World Championship’ event has officially begun. Apparently before this newfangled No-Limit Hold ‘em phase took off all the pros played a quaint little game called 7-Card Stud. They’re playing it now.

A total of 150 players put up five figures for the event, including mixed game masters and poker legends such as Scotty Nguyen, Jennifer Harman, David Benyamine, Doyle Brunson and PokerStars Pros Barry Greenstein and Daniel Negreanu. All those names are still in the field with Negreanu catching quads over quads against David Grey to propel him up the chip counts in the penultimate hand of the night.

Chip leader, though, is none other than recently-crowned $50,000 Players’ Championship winner Michael ‘The Grinder’ Mizrachi, who is boasting 188,000. Coincidentally, in second place on 180,000 is Vladimir Schmelev who came runner-up to... that’s right, Michael Mizrachi in the $50,000 Players’ Championship.

Doyle Brunson has made the top five with a more-than-healthy stack of 100,000 while Negreanu’s recent cold deck has sent him up to the six-figure mark himself. Join us tomorrow for updates as the 103 remaining players make their way to a final table of 8.
