Scott Montgomery wins Event #36; $1,000 NL Hold ‘em

Thursday, 24 June 2010

In 2008 Scott Montgomery was one of the inaugural November Nine, coming fifth in the World Series of Poker $10,000 Main Event that Peter Eastgate won to become the then youngest ever Main Event champion. The Canadian Pro took home $3,088,012 for his fifth place finish.

He couldn’t win the most coveted bracelet in the poker world but he’s gone some way towards making up for it by taking down the gold for Event #36, one of the six $1,000 NL tournaments at the 2010 WSOP.

Montgomery began the day on just 604,000 for the second-shortest stack and less than 7% of the chips in play. However a combination of some nice cards; bold, aggressive play and probably the security of $3m plus two years’ interest behind him saw him defeat Mick Carlson heads-up to grab the win.

Montgomery eliminated third-place finisher Adam Richardson the hand after doubling through him with K7o against AT. The two got it in with QT and KJ but Richardson couldn’t outdraw Montgomery’s flopped Queen.

Two hands of heads-up play later and it was all over when Montgomery’s A7o held against Carlson’s K2 on a blank board to take home the bracelet and $481,760 – a fraction of what he won in 2008 but great for him nonetheless.

The full final table payouts were as follows:

1. Scott Montgomery $481,760
2. Mick Carlson $297,996
3. Adam Richardson $210,892
4. Daniel Fuhs $152,655
5. Sebastien Roy $111,783
6. John Dolan $82,804
7. Peter Dufek $62,033
8. Timothy Beeman $46,985
9. Michael Michnik $35,986
