Ryan Welch wins Event #51, $3,000 NL Triple Chance

Friday, 2 July 2010

A shade under 1,000 players hit the tables on Tuesday to compete in the $3,000 NL Triple Chance event that was Event #51 of the WSOP. The twist on the format was the ability to re-buy twice at any point, or choose to save the two re-buys for the add-on period.

After three days of play, Ryan Welch has emerged as the champion who takes over half a million dollars along with his first WSOP bracelet. His previous biggest cash was for $36,000 after coming runner up at the Foxwoods Poker Classic in 2009 but this monster win eclipses that by a country mile.

The eventual winner came to the final table fifth in chips, with all eyes on Tommy Vedes as the EPT and WPT winner sought to complete his triple crown. Unfortunately for the Festa al Lago champion, he crashed out in seventh and allowed Welch to reach heads-up with Jon Eaton.

Welch overcame a chip deficit of over 1.5-1 in order to best Eaton for the title. In the final hand, Eaton called a raise from the big blind and then they both checked through a flop of 9c-7s-6c. Eaton bet and Welch called on the Td turn before following up with a bet of over half a million chips on the Kd river. Welch pushed all-in for almost twice the size of the pot and Eaton, who was barely covered, pondered before making the call.

He didn’t get to show his hand as Welch instantly turned up QJ for the nuts, before running to celebrate with his family as the staff counted down the stacks and confirmed him as the winner.

The full final table payouts were as follows:
1. Ryan Welch $559,371
2. Jon Eaton $344,830
3. Guillaume Darcourt $223,459
4. Will Failla $163,532
5. Bradley Craig $121,451
6. Sergey Lebedev $91,407
7. Tommy Vedes $69,647
8. Noel Scruggs $53,694
9. Tad Jurgens $41,842
