Frank Kassela wins star-studded Player of the Year race

Friday, 9 July 2010

Once again, professional players dominated the World Series of Poker and therefore the Player of the Year race. The competition saw John Juanda (who had five cashes including four final tables) and Frank Kassela (who had four cashes including two bracelets and a final table) running neck-and-neck on POTY points.

To make it run even closer to the wire, both were on the bubble of Event #52, the $25,000 6-max event, with 19 remaining and 18 paid. A cash was worth 5 points, so when Juanda finished in 19th place Kassela took a slim lead – expanding it by finishing in third place and earning $556,053.

In total, Kassela cashed five times and earned a grand total of $1.2m plus for his World Series of Poker. Unsurprisingly, Michael Mizrachi’s four cashes and $50,000 Players’ Championship win puts him as the 2010 WSOP’s top earner with almost $1.7m to his name after the 41st series. He is one of six players to have earned over a million dollars this year.

Kassela’s POTY-winning cashes and wins were as follows:

Event #12; $1,500 NL Hold ‘em – 5th place ($11,027)
Event #15; $10,000 Stud Hi/Lo championships – 1st place ($447,446)
Event #40; $1,500 Razz – 1st place ($214,085)
Event #48; $2,500 Mixed – 36th place ($5,376)
Event #52; $25,000 6-max NL Hold ‘em – 3rd place ($556,053)

The top five POTY rankings are as follows:

1. Frank Kassela 285 (five cashes inc. three final tables, two bracelets)
2. John Juanda 225 (five cashes inc. four final tables)
3. Vladimir Schmelev 210 (four cashes, all final tables)
4. Dan Heimiller 205 (seven cashes, inc. two final tables)
5. Michael Mizrachi 190 (four cashes, inc. three final tables, one bracelet)
