Event#7 - Peter Glenecser wins $2,500 NL 2-7 Triple Draw lowball

Draw poker isn’t the most popular variant of the game right now (but wait until Red Dead Redemption sparks it off again); less so the 2-7 lowball variant. Though, that didn’t prevent almost 300 players putting $2,500 on the line to compete for a bracelet in Event #7.

The Hungarian online tournament pro, whose prior biggest cash was for just under $60,000 one Sunday on PokerStars, won $180,730 after defeating the six-handed final table in the No-Limit event. David Chiu was certainly the favourite in the event but Gelencser chipped up as Chiu’s starting chip lead fell rapidly.

Gelencser, primarily a Hold ‘em player, must have been nervous heads-up against 2-7 specialist Raphael Zimmerman but his overwhelming chip lead saw him finish off the veteran quickly. Zimmerman was all-in after the second draw and the Hungarian stood pat with a 9-7-4-3-2. Zimmerman had hope with 8-6-5-3 after one discard, needing a deuce, four or seven to stay in the tournament. He paired his six, though, and that was that.

The full final table payouts were as follows:

1st: Peter Gelencser - $180,730
2nd: Raphael Zimmerman - $111,686
3rd: Don Mcnamara - $73,803
4th: David Chiu - $50,157
5th: Jameson Painter - $34,843
6th: Leonard Martin - $24,723
