Event#11 - Tom “durrrr” Dwan finishes second in $1.5k NLHE

Monday, 7 June 2010

After the field of 2,563 had been whittled down to just 9 the second prize was $381,000 and the first prize $615,000 – except for Tom Dwan, whose plethora of bracelet bets meant that first prize was over $2,000,000.

Dwan came to the final table of the event with a large chip lead and bullied the table relentlessly, playing perhaps the biggest edge any one player has had over a table since the dawn of poker. Seriously – eight unknowns and Tom “durrrr” Dwan were the final nine.

Durrrr entered heads-up against Simon Watts, a $1/$2 online grinder with a chip deficiency of more than 2:1. For over 90 minutes Dwan stole pot after pot to bring his chip stack up before taking a hit and repeating the process but he couldn’t find the right end of that cooler.

After Dwan folded to an all-in he was left with just 1.65m chips at 60k/120k and shoved his last twelve big blinds or so with Qc-6c. Unfortunately for him Simon Watt had found 99 and though the board, full of aces and kings, gave Dwan hope he couldn’t hit a lucky river and had to settle for second.
He immediately left to resume playing the $10,000 Stud 8 championship event – the field there was collectively relieved that they don’t have to shell out millions to the young gun. Better luck next time, Tom.
