Carter Phillips wins Event #16, $1,500 No Limit Hold ‘em 6-max

Thursday, 10 June 2010

Carter Phillips stamped his name on the poker world last year when, in September, he won the EPT Barcelona at the age of 20. Now 21 he has made his mark on the WSOP by winning his first bracelet after conquering a 1,663-strong field in the $1,500 No-Limit Hold ‘em 6-max tournament.

The final table was supposedly the youngest in WSOP history with the age range crossing the broad spectrum from the legal minimum of 21 all the way to 26 years old. Phillips seems an appropriate champion for the table of youth.

Phillips said: "It's more amazing than I ever could have imagined” which, if anything, is probably understating things as this bracelet also comes with the handy prize of $482,774 to go alongside it.

Phillips defeated Samuel Gerber heads-up in order to take down the event, using his huge stack to his advantage. He eliminated Craig Bergerson after being caught bluffing with Js-7s. It could have been worse after Phillips saw he was up against 77 but a jack out of the door solved that quandary.

Just twenty minutes later the tournament was over, Gerber getting the last of his chips in with Q8o and running into Phillips’s big slick. An ace high board sealed the deal and Gerber was out by the turn, forced to settle for $298,726.

The full final table payouts were as follows:

1. Carter Phillips - $482,774
2. Samuel Gerber - $298,726
3. Craig Bergeron - $189,661
4. Hugo Perez - $124,690
5. Russell Thomas - $84,256
6. David Diaz - $58,483
