Monday, 19 April 2010

The Tournament of Champions is returning to the WSOP this year with the public being given the chance to vote for who will play in the event. Organisers Harrah's have revealed details of who is currently in the top 20.

The list contains a host of familiar names but there are a number of notable absences. Those featuring in the top 20 at the moment include former World Champions Greg Raymer, Doyle Brunson, Phil Hellmuth, Chris Ferguson, Dan Harrington, Scotty Nguyen, Huck Seed, Joe Hachem and Johnny Chan.

Others names heading the vote are TJ Cloutier, Antonio Esfandiari, Sam Farha, Allen Cunningham, Barry Greenstein, Phil Ivey, John Juanda, Howard Lederer, Erik Seidel, Daniel Negreanu and the Jennifer Harman, the only woman currently in the top 20.

Fans have until 15th June to register their vote which could see the likes of Annette Obrestad, Jamie Gold, Carlos Mortensen, Freddy Deed, Phil Galfond or Jason Mercier make the field.

Defending Main Event Champion Joe Cada and 2009 WSOPE winner Barry Shulman are guaranteed a place in the $1m event as are previous Tournament of Champions winners Annie Duke, Mike Matusow and Mike Sexton. They will be joined by a pair of online qualifiers.

Harrah's Vice President Ty Stewart said, “The poker community has rallied behind this event and judging by the results thus far, hosting a tournament with a field such as this would be a tremendous event. Saying that, the voting is so tight and close and with two months of voting to go, we can see this list changing dramatically between now and June 15th.”
