With all of the Day 1 tiers played out, the men who crunch the numbers at the WSOP have done their maths and told us what we all wanted to know – how much will this year’s champion pick up?
First place for this year’s Championship event will see the winner take home $9.12 million, with a total field of 6,844 generating a total prize pool of $64.3 million. The increase in size has not come as a surprise to the man behind the tournament.
“It’s inevitable when you play on the global stage that we’re on...that you’re going to be subject to different fluctuations at different times.” said Jeffrey Pollack, the commissioner of the WSOP. “The fact that we broke all of the records we set last year is terrific, but there may be years where we’re up, years where we’re down. Bottom line is that we’re here for the long term and we’re not going anywhere, and I don’t know many poker properties that can say that.”
The year so far has been dominated by the pro players, with over a dozen bracelets being won by some of the best pros in the game. The trend is one which Mike Matusow believes will continue. “It’s the year of the pro, and just got a feeling,” said Matusow. “I just got a gut feeling. Who knows, it could be nine stiffs at the table, but I think you’re going to see something different this year.”
Joe Hachem was very much an amateur back in 2005, but his win and his successes on the WPT since have established him as a pro player in his own right. The Australian believes the pros are finally adjusting to how to beat amateur players in the big events.
“Pros have gotten used to playing with these guys who were kind of freaking them out at first because they weren’t quite sure how to deal with them,” Hachem said.
Either way, we do know that come November, one man – or woman – will be leaving the Rio $9m richer.
