In what would be a remarkable move, there are rumours that this year’s World Series of Poker Main Event final table may be broadcast nearly live and only after it had been delayed by several months. The move is being touted to accommodate television.
The speculation is suggesting that the final table would be aired on ESPN, possibly as late as October. Once the final nine had been set for the finale, the tournament would then be halted to give television companies time to hype the event. The finalists could be interviewed, and the event touted in much the same way as big boxing fights. Another potential benefit for television companies would that viewers would not be as likely to know who had won when watching the coverage.
Various forums are suggesting the broadcast would be ‘nearly live’, although sources such as PartTimePoker.com believe the footage would be recorded on a closed set and broadcast a couple of days later. With the poker press being as hot as it is now, this would surely aggrevate poker broadcasters who want to ‘unveil’ the champion.
No official statements have been made, but the topic itself is an interesting one.
