As others around him tightened up, Thang Luu went on a rampage collecting chips as those around him tried to secure their place at the final table of Event #6. Doing so allowed him to get there with the chip lead, which he then converted into a bracelet win.
Luu had to beat a field of 832 in what proved to be the largest Hi/Lo field in WSOP history. As well as his bracelet, Luu will wake up $243,356 richer.
As they unbagged the chips, the players stood as follows:
Thang Luu – 560,000
Greg Jamison – 333,000
Chris Falconer – 331,000
Scott Clements – 315,000
Mark Wilds – 226,000
Spencer Lawrence – 226,000
George Guzman – 196,000
Craig Sabel – 160,000
James Prichard – 155,000
Scott Clements came to the table as the player with the biggest reputation, but he never got started here. After losing several big pots, he ended up being eliminated in ninth place for $22,172.
With the limit format, eliminations were not as dramatic as in some other events, especially when in this game many players can end up surviving by picking up half of the pot. As the players fell to the wayside one by one, we were eventually left with Thang Luu and Spencer Lawrence to battle it out for the bracelet.
After a massive hand where Luu’s nut flush crippled Lawrence, the chips finally all went to Luu after flopped two pair and a flush draw against a gutshot straight draw for Lawrence. Luu faded the outs, and so sent Lawrence home in second place with $156,343 as compensation for missing out on his place in the record books. Thang Luu took $243,356 as well as his first WSOP bracelet.
