So big was the field in Event 27 that they were unable to play down to just one final table for the last day. A total of 2,706 players entered the tournament, and with (for once) a lack of professional players amongst the chip leaders at the start of play, the hunt for the bracelet was on.
After a twelve hour day, the title went to Russian-born Vitaly Lunkin, who had begun with a slight chip lead but did well to convert it into a win, especially when the cards seemingly conspired to defeat him.
As the players filtered their way down to the final table and then heads-up, it was left for Brett Kimes to try and stop Lunkin from winning. Holding the chip lead, Kimes was in the driving seat, but one key hand looked to put the Russian in firm control. Sadly for Vitaly, the deck doesn’t always seem to follow the script.
The hand in question saw Kimes raise on the button and Lunkin make the call. The flop came 9d-6d-5d, which saw Kimes check raised all in. The Texan made the call, only to find his middle pair, top kicker was in deep trouble to the flopped straight of Lunkin. Two running diamonds got Kimes out of jail as the players chopped with the board showing a flush, although the reprieve was short lived. Moments later, Lunkin flopped top pair and then managed to get Kimes’ chips in after Kimes caught second pair on the turn.
