Whilst Day 2 might have been an 18-hour grind, the final table of the WSOP Circuit event in Atlantic City was to prove explosive. Eric Buchman came into the final day as the chip leader, but it was Racener who was to win the title, improving on his thid place finish in this event in 2006.
First to the rail was Sam Skolnik, who entered the final table as short stack. Moving all in preflop on only the second hand of the day, he was called in two spots, and Skolnik must have been hopeful when his K3o hit the board of Ks-7d-8c. After the action on the flop, Skolnik’s hand was heads up against Dave Fox’s 8h-9s. The running 6-5 gave Fox the straight, sending Skolnik out in ninth.
Players kept falling, and Fox had a nasty beat of his own to contend with. All of Fox’s chips made their way to the centre whilst he held pocket aces, coming up against QJs of Buchman. The flop was a rather cold T-9-8, flopping the underdog the nuts. No improvement for Fox, who ended up sixth.
Others were busted out in equally painful fashion, with the top pair of Thomas Fee being chased down by Racener’s flush draw in a hand that was to give Racener the momentum to get to three handed play on even chips with Feming Chan and Buchman.
Heads up play was short after Racener won a key hand in the fifth hand between the two. After Buckner was left crippled he pushed next hand with A9 only to run into AK. No outdraws this time, and Racener won $379,392, as well as the Championship ring and a seat into the 2008 WSOP Main Event.
