WPT launches Alpha8

In a bid to keep up with the ever-changing poker landscape while offering something valuable to players and fans, the World Poker Tour (WPT) has announced the premiere of its new Alpha8.

A new series of super high-roller events created specifically for television, Alpha8 borrows some features from the now defunct Onyx Cup run by Full Tilt Poker and is due to kick off on August 26 with the Seminole Hard Rock Showdown in Florida.

Alpha8 events are being specifically aimed at elite level players and wealthy amateurs with buy-ins starting at $100,000 while the opening tournament is to be recorded and shown on US television channel Fox Sports 1 in March.

In much the same way the Onyx Cup attempted to create a global series for high- rollers, WPT President Adam Pliska stated that Alpha8 is to tour across the world showcasing the game’s finest players competing for ‘multi-million dollar prize pools’.

To complement the new series of events, the WPT has recruited a new host in the form of Lynn Gilmartin. Having previously worked with other poker outlets including PokerNews.com, she will be on hand to provide interviews and colour commentary alongside more in-depth analysis.
