Day 3 began with 188 players returning to the Fontana Lounge, with
100 due to make the money. While the conditions in the card room
might have been a little cramped, it certainly didn’t stay that way
for long as eliminations came at a pace rarely seen for a
tournament with such a slow blind structure.
The bubble eventually burst in the most horrible of ways - well,
unless you were one of the remaining hundred who’d just cashed.
Jordan Rich was the unfortunate one who went home without a dime,
but he did have the story of how Amir Vahedi’s pocket eights hit
the two outer against Rich’s aces.
Now that everybody left had earned at least $39,570, the chips
moved around the tables with a gay abandon. The next two levels saw
over 40 players eliminated, including Daniel Negreanu. Other
notable eliminations included Joe Cassidy, Anna Wroblewski, Padraig
Parkinson, Burt Boutin, Eugene Todd, Kristy Gazes, and Mark
Seif.
Another player who took a harsh bit to cripple her stack was
Jayde Tran, the wife of Kenny Tran. Her pocket Aces were beaten by
the A-3 of David Chiu, who hit runner-runner straight to leave Mrs
Tran on 27,000. However, her husband has taught her a few things
about resilience at the table, and she eventually ended the day on
179,000.
The rest of the field must have been slightly alarmed at the end
of the day to see the march of Gus Hansen towards to the top of the
leaderboard. With a massive pot and equally large decision to make,
Hansen made a monster call with AK against the AQ of Tim Phan on a
A-4-3 flop. The turn and river bricked out, leaving Phan crippled
and Hansen dragging in a pot in excess of 2.4 million.
Fifty-five players remain in the tournament, and play on Day 4
will see the field play down to the final 27.
