January 20th saw the inaugural leg of the WPT Ladies Tour at Atlantic City, and was a great success. Battling it out in the first WPT Ladies Championship were 383 ladies intent on winning the $33,321 first place prize and a seat at the WPT Ladies Championship at the Bellagio in April.
'Not only were we (the WPT) excited by the turnout, the ladies themselves were thrilled with the event and stated that they would be back to play at the tournament in Foxwoods,' said Lyndsay LaGree, the senior manager of public relations with the WPT.
'For many of the women that played in the event, it was a chance for them to step up and play in a strong tournament without having to put up a huge buy-in,' added LaGree. 'The women involved said they had played home games extensively but (the Borgata tournament) was an opportunity for them to enter into the tournament world. We're very happy to have provided such an outlet for the ladies.'
The field at the Borgata leg saw Jane Gold, mum of the blueberry-munching WSOP champion Jamie Gold, as well as Olga Varkonyi, wife of another Main Event champion, Robert Varkonyi. Both fared well, with Gold finishing 15th and Varkonyi 4th.
Although the Commerce may not see as large a field as the Borgata event, organisers expect it to be another fiercely fought event.
'With the larger buy-in ($1,000 versus the $300 at the Borgata), the Women in Poker Hall of Fame festivities in Las Vegas and, of course, the Super Bowl, the tournament could be smaller than what we had at the Borgata, but it should be a very challenging event,' said LaGree.
