The beginning of Day 4 at the Doyle Brunson Classic saw 44 players resume play, with a swarm of former WPT event winners still in contention to win another title. Amongst the likes of Gus Hansen, Daniel Negreanu, Hoyt Corkins and Dave ‘Devilfish’ Ulliott were a mix of highly respected pros (such as Todd Brunson and Daniel Alaei), a former WSOP Main Event Champion (Huck Seed), and a selection of talented hopefuls who had already outlasted some of the best players in the game.
The start of the day saw the end of the road for some of the big names still in the field. The first to fall was former WPT winner Roy Winston, and he was soon followed by Marcel Luske, Alaei and Jose Rosenkrantz. By the time of the first break, they were 37 remaining.
The first two levels saw half of the ten remaining champions fall to the wayside, but Negreanu soon got some of the momentum back for the five who remained in the field.
Negreanu had been playing in a lot of pots and opened another pot to 40,000. David Baker reraised to 140,000 out of the small blind and Negreanu called. The flop came Tc 8h 4c and Baker immediately moved all in. Negreanu instantly called and showed Baker a flopped set of eights, leaving Baker’s As-Kd drawing very slim. The board offered no help to the AK, and Negreanu doubled up to 1,155,000.
Gus Hansen won’t be joining Daniel for Day 5 though, after his dominating As-Ks was outdrawn by Ryan Daut’s Kd-Js. A fatal jack on the river sent Gus home in 22nd spot.
Day Five will see Negreanu as the chip leader (2,279,000), with Devilfish, Erick Lindgren and Todd Brunson all still in contention.
