The second and final starting day of the WPT Doyle Brunson Classic has concluded, and we officially have one of the biggest fields and prizepools outside of the World Series. A total of 664 players bought in for $15,000 a head, the resulting prize pool of $9,661,200 being the largest outside of the WSOP or WPT Championship.
At the end of the week, two players will be leaving with over a million dollars, the winner taking home a cool $2,484,605 while second has to put up with a $1,252,640 consolation prize.
Another moments silence was held for Chip Reese before players took their seats. One table in particular caught the public imagination – and their ears, I suspect – as Hevad Khan and Mike Matusow found themselves on table 47. They weren’t alone though, being joined by Barry Greenstein, Ted Forrest, Jared Hamby and Steve Buckner. Buckner and Greenstein both hit the rail early on in the day though, detracting a little from the star-power at the table. You do have to wonder how Khan’s monkey impressions were greeted by Matusow though…
One player who has a reputation for being quick out of the blocks is Joe Sebok. He has managed to accumulate chips so far here, closing the day out on 125,025 and he will be doing his utmost to repeat previous occasions where he has started well only for it to come undone later on.
Meanwhile, making very little noise along the way, Phil Ivey had glided to the chip lead by knocking out several unknown players. Ivey, one of the elite players in poker today, ended up bagging 233,025 chips and now has the overall chip lead.
445 players will resume play later today, and eyes will be set to see if Phil can finally take down a WPT title which has so far eluded him.
