WPT Championship under way

WPT Championship under way

Monday, 19 April 2010

The number of players paying the $25,000 entry fee for the WPT Championship may be miniscule compared to the EPT event in San Remo (just 161 compared to 1,240) but there are enough big names involved to keep the interest levels up.

Leading the way at the end of Day 1 was Shawn Buchanan who'd amassed a stack of 388,600, almost 100,000 ahead of nearest rivals Brian Lemke and David Benyamine. Defending champion Yevgeniy Timoshekno sits in fourth place but looming large is the presence of Phil Ivey though who finished the day eighth in chips.

Eliminations were rare on the opening day with just 23 players hitting the rail. They included the likes of Annette Obrestad, Antonio Esfandiari and Jeff Shulman.

The top ten chip counts at the end of the opening day were as follows:

1. Shawn Buchanan 388,600
2. Brian Lemke 298,825
3. David Benyamine 291,275
4. Yevgeniy Timoshenko 277,275
5. Soheil Shamseddin 244,000
6. Chris Moore 243,700
7. Cody Slaubaugh 231,300
8. Phil Ivey 230,250
9. Todd Terry 213,825
10. Christian Harder 211,675

Registrations are allowed five hours into Day 2 with a number of players expected to enter the fray when the action resumes at 8pm UK time.
