Another star-studded field congregated in Atlantic City for Day 1 of the WPT Borgota Poker Classic. Some of the big-hitters in the field included Phil Ivey, Mike Matusow, Barry Greenstein, Eric Seidel and Erick Lindgren.
It was a tough day for the professionals, with Ivey, Lindgren and Greenstain all falling to the wayside during play. Another former WPT champion was involved in one of the biggest hands of the day that brought with it one of the sickest bad beats.
Holding pocket fives, Schulman took a flop which, to his delight, contained the other two fives in the deck, making him quads, reading Ks 5s 5d. The turn came the 4s, and when the river 2s came, all of the money went into the middle, with Schulman’s quads having been runner-runnered by his opponents As-3s: a straight flush. Quad fives beaten by a straight flush would have won a tasty bad-beat jackpot in many of Atlantic City’s cash games, but sadly for Schulman, he won nothing other than one hell of a bad beat story.
One player who ran well at the last leg of the WPT in Tunica was John Phan, and he got off to another quick start. The only problem for ‘The Razor’ was Jeff Madsen, who was proving to blunt Phan’s ambitions. Madsen managed to make a great call on the turn with third pair, no kicker on a board reading Qs-9d-8d-6d, and when the river brought the 9s, both players checked, with Madsen’s 8s-7s being good. It didn’t stop Phan from bagging 182,000 in chips at the end of the day though, which is good for the overnight chip lead.
Following close on Phan’s heels are some other big names: Justin Bonomo with 148,675, Joe Seebok on 147,700 and Vanessa Rousso on 148,350.
