WPT Barcelona Day 1A in the book

WPT Barcelona Day 1A in the book

Thursday, 20 May 2010

You wait ages for a World Poker Tour event on this side of the Atlantic then two come along at once. After last week's Paris festival the WPT circus has move to the Catalan capital for its latest big buy in tournament.

A total of 134 players paid the €3,200+€300 entry fee for the opening flight of the WPT Spanish Championship in Barcelona and at bagging up time it was Spaniard Roberto Santiago Garcia who had the most reason to cheer.

Garcia was the only player to accumulate a five figure stack by the end of play. There are still a number of big names dotted amongst the 50 players who survived the Day 1A though. They include WPT Paris High Roller runner up Sorel Mizzi, the third place finisher in the 2009 WSOP Main Event Antoine Saout and Spain's Leo Margets.

Jack Ellwood and Priyan de Mel lead the British challenge and are handily placed heading into day two.

More big names, including Formula 1 driver Jaime Alguersuari are expected for the second opening flight which gets under way later this afternoon.
