Vitaliy Lunkin wins WSOP $40,000 NL HE Event #2

Monday, 1 June 2009

The $40,000 No Limit Hold Em bracelet has been won by Vitaliy Lunkin. The Russian defeated a final table including big name pros Justin Bonomo and Ted Forrest not to mention former World Champion Greg Raymer. Lunkin outlasted a field of 201 runners to collect a cheque for $1,891,012 as well as the all important gold bracelet.

The victory is the latest in a long string of excellent performances for the former backgammon player. As well as cashing at the EPT Grand Final in Monte Carlo, Lunkin won the recent Poker Stars Russian title. The $40,000 No Limit Hold Em is his 2nd victory at the WSOP. He picked up a bracelet in last year's $1,500 No Limit Event.

Lunkin sealed the win in the early hours of Monday morning, after nearly 2 hours of heads up play with Isaac Haxton. He looked down to see two lovely aces. Haxton, holding 8c3d pushed on a flop of Qd10d8d for bottom pair and a flush draw. The turn brought a 7c and Ks giving Lunkin the bracelet.

The final positions and payouts were as follows:

1. Vitaly Lunkin - $1,891,012
2. Isaac Haxton - $1,168,566
3. Greg Raymer - $774,927
